Barry is an ethical hacker, public speaker and cybersecurity technologist at XMON with a passion for building a safer digital world. He helps organizations to strengthen their security and is advising the Dutch Police to combat cybercrime. Involved in the hacker community, Barry contributes to initiatives including OrangeCon, DIVD, Hack_Right, and HackShield.
Drawing on hands-on experience with everything from ransomware operations and cloud platforms to radio technology and physical security systems, Barry brings a practical, real-world perspective to cybersecurity. Technical workshop: Introduction to Malware analyses and IOC harvesting - Bring Your Laptop (Optional)
This two-hour workshop guides participants through a realistic malware case from start to finish, beginning with a phishing email and ending with a practical list of Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) and guidance on how to use them.
After a short introduction and safety briefing, participants examine a phishing email to identify suspicious elements. They then move on to a hands-on exercise where they analyse one or more sample files and extract basic indicators such as file hashes, domains, IP addresses, and other relevant artifacts. Depending on their experience level, participants can either work with pre-analysed samples presented through a guided demonstration or perform the analysis themselves using their own tools with instructor guidance.
Next, participants observe (or, if appropriate for their experience level, briefly perform) dynamic malware analysis in a controlled environment, focusing on key behaviours such as process creation, file system activity, and network traffic.
In the final part of the workshop, participants combine their findings into a clear, actionable IOC list and discuss which indicators are most valuable for detection and response. The session is designed to be practical, fast-paced, and accessible, giving participants a complete overview of the malware analysis workflow without requiring extensive prior experience.
